What would happen if you travelled far enough away from Earth to see it differently?
That is the starting point for Entangled Lives, my new single. Set somewhere in the future, the song follows an astronaut travelling deep into space who begins to feel increasingly alienated from both the person he loves and the planet he has left behind.
I was inspired to write the song after reading Merlin Sheldrake’s fascinating book Entangled Life, which explores the hidden networks and relationships that connect organisms within the natural world. Rather than directly retelling those ideas, I took the concept of interconnectedness and transplanted it into a science-fiction setting.
The astronaut looking down at Earth becomes a metaphor for distance, isolation and belonging. From millions of miles away, Earth appears as a small blue planet, but the astronaut’s perspective makes its connections feel more important rather than less:
“Looking down from outer space, on our blue planet
Somewhere there is you.”
The chorus describes our lives as “filaments networked to survive” — a phrase that echoes the interconnected networks explored in Sheldrake’s book, while also describing the invisible emotional connections between people.
There is a playful side to the journey too. Amid the vertigo, irregular pulse and cosmic dust, the astronaut observes, “I’m not getting paid enough”, keeping the song grounded in an everyday human experience for the majority of us, despite its futuristic setting.
Ultimately, Entangled Lives isn’t really a song about astronauts or space exploration. Space simply provides the perspective. It is a song about what we discover about ourselves when we become separated from the people, places and natural environment we are connected to — and how, however far we travel, those connections remain. Musically, the song sits within my evolving modern-vintage sound: 12-string guitar, melodic roots-pop and indie-folk influences, combined with an atmospheric quality that reflects the song’s journey into space.
